Bursting Strength Tester

A bursting strength tester measures the resistance of materials like paper, paperboard, textiles, and corrugated board to rupture under a multi-directional force. It determines the maximum pressure a material can withstand before bursting, providing an indication of its overall strength and durability, particularly for packaging applications.

Types of Bursting Strength Tester

Paper/Paperboard Bursting Strength Tester (Mullen Tester): Uses a rubber diaphragm and hydraulic pressure to burst the sample.

Fabric Bursting Strength Tester (Diaphragm Type): Similar principle to paper, used for woven, knitted, and non-woven fabrics.

Corrugated Board Bursting Strength Tester: Designed for the higher pressures required for multi-ply corrugated materials.

Digital Bursting Strength Tester: Features digital display, data logging, and automatic clamping.

Applications in Various Industries:

Packaging Industry: Essential for quality control of corrugated boxes, paper bags, and other packaging materials to ensure they can withstand internal pressure from contents or external handling stresses.

Paper Industry: Evaluating the strength and quality of various paper grades.

Textile Industry: Assessing the burst resistance of fabrics used for apparel, upholstery, and technical textiles.

Technology:

Hydraulic pump (manual or motorized), rubber diaphragm, pressure transducer, pressure gauge (analog or digital), clamping mechanism (manual or pneumatic), automatic burst detection, data display, and often statistical analysis software.

Material Selection Considerations:

  • Body/Frame: Robust cast iron or steel to withstand high pressures and maintain stability.
  • Clamping Jaws: Hardened steel with non-slip surfaces to securely hold the specimen without tearing.
  • Diaphragm: High-quality, durable rubber (e.g., natural rubber, neoprene) that is flexible yet strong enough to transmit pressure uniformly.
  • Hydraulic System: Brass, stainless steel, or other corrosion-resistant metals for the pump and piping.
  • Pressure Gauge: Calibrated materials suitable for the pressure range.
