Filters use activated carbon and RO membranes. Electronics (payment interface, pumps) are enclosed in waterproof, dustproof enclosures. Materials are chosen for durability: for example, UV lamps are quartz-encased, pumps have ceramic shafts for corrosion resistance. The design ensures that no contaminants leach into the water; typically, the final stage is a UV or ozone sterilizer. Compliance with drinking-water safety standards dictates the use of certified materials and filters.
