The indenter is forced into the test material under a minor preliminary load and the permanent effect is studied to know the hardness of the sample material.
The Rockwell hardness test method, as defined in ASTM E-18, is the most widely used hardness test method. Rockwell test is easier to execute and more accurate than other types of hardness testing methods. The Rockwell test method is used on all type of materials, except in conditions like highly uneven structure or surface, too large indentations for the application or prohibition from the sample size or sample shape.
